| Description |
English: Middleton Top Engine The boilers. The unfortunate boilerman would have had to working in all weathers without shelter. These are Cornish boilers, with a single firetube through each boiler. The hot gases flow to the far end of the tube before returning under the boiler to this end. They then turn back along side flues to the back of the boiler before finding their way up the chimney. The square openings at the sides of the boilers are the access manholes into the bottom and side flues. At regular intervals these have to be cleaned of soot and ash. |
