Title
Middle_to_Late_Bronze_Age:Spear
Description
English: Fragment of cast copper alloy (bronze) metalwork, probably part of Middle – Late Bronze Age spearhead (c. 1500-800 BC). The fragment is incomplete and irregular, being broadly sub-rectangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. From the shape of the cross section it is possible the fragment is from the upper socket or blade of the spear, the cross section is a little artificial in that the outer surface is curved and the broken edges are both on the underside / reverse, suggesting it is part of a much rounded artefact. The curvature of the fragment is similar to that seen on the upper sections of large socketed spearheads. The reverse face of the artefact is irregular but patinated, there are several areas of pitting and the surface looks to be unfinished. This may suggest that the artefact has laminated in the ground. A single large casting bubble is present on the upper edge of the inside of the fragment. The dating of the artefact is based mostly on the style and condition of the patina. The mid brown green colour is often seen in later prehistoric metalwork in the uplands of Wales and the Marches. The fragment measures 49.7mm length, is 15.5mm width and 5.5mm thick, it weighs 9.97 grams.
