Title
Middle or Late Early Medieval Mount (illustration by Jason Gibbons)
Description
English: Middle or Late Saxon gilded copper alloy mount or unidentified object. Trefoil plate with a beaded border, each foil containing a pelta-shaped moulding with internaly curled ends which terminate in prominant pellets. Three arris extend from the centre of the pelta-shaped mouldings and meet to form central facets before continueing as a single arris to a short broken section at the edge of the plate between two foils. There are no other breaks. On the reverse are file marks, gilding and silvery material which may be solder.

Length 24mm. Width 26mm. Maximum thickness 4mm.

A 9th-century belt mount re-used as a brooch from Domburg / Walcheren, Netherlands, has a different form but very similar decoration, See Eggenstein et al (2008, 186, no.35.9).

Barry Ager (British Museum) and Gabor Thomas (Reading University) suggest a Carolingian origin and 9th century date for this object.
