Title
Middle Saxon/Late Saxon buckle frame (reverse)
Description
English: Middle Saxon-Late Saxon incomplete rectangular copper alloy buckle frame, more than half of the outside edge and all of one side surviving. The (slightly bent) side is of sub-triangular section, with a rounded lower face, and the upper and outer faces both decorated with eight transverse grooves. The side ends in animal-head terminals, both canted sideways, with drilled ears, and mouths represented by transverse grooves. Both terminals are very worn and other details are uncertain. The round section outside edge has a centrally placed triangular lobe with pin notch on the top surface. The original dimensions can be estimated at c.36mm x 30mm.

This is closely related to a class of D-shaped buckles with animal-head terminals, especially that from Old Sarum, Wilts (Hinton 1974, 60-1, cat. no. 32). Norfolk examples are well scattered and include those from Fulmodeston (HER 17342), Ingworth (HER 21830) and Ryston (HER 31096).
