Title
Middle Early Medieval: Incomplete spiral grooved headed pin
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy pin of Early Medieval dating (AD 720 to AD 850).

The pin consists of a globular head with eleven (11) spiralling grooves around the surface. This is often referred to as 'Wrythen' style. A small circular depression is present at the top of the head. A small circular collar is present at the base of the head. The shaft is incomplete, with the tip missing. It has a circular cross section. A narrowing is present at one point on the shaft, but this is probably post mortem damage, which has resulted in a lateral bend in the shaft.

The pin measures 49.0 mm in length. The head has a maximum diameter of 10.4 mm and 10.7 mm tall. The collar is 1.6 mm long. The shaft has a diameter of 2.5 mm. It weighs 5.4 g.

The pin is a mid green colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

The grooved spiral decoration on the head and the presence of a collar beneath the head, is consistent with an Early Medieval dating for this artefact. Similar pin heads have been recorded on the PAS database as: NARC-6EB2C5, NCL-85EDB5, , NMS-11C7B1 and IOW-D8B445. However it is worth noting that the spiral grooving style of decoration for pin heads is a long lived style as both Roman (CAM-736F88 and SOM-5323D1) and Medieval (WAW-11B756) examples have been recorded.
