English: TREASURE CASE 2005 T421 A rare gold pendant, dating to the Mid-late Bronze Age. Biconical pendant made using narrow, c-sectioned gold strip wound spirally. The piece tapers to each end, having its maximum diameter across the mid-section. One end is broken off (missing) and there is slight compression at this end. An eyelet for suspension is placed centrally at the thickest part and this appears to be of the same c-sectioned strip. The hollow pendant was plugged with dirt at the time of inspection. Maximum surviving length 24mm; thickness at mid-section 6mm; weight 1.75 grams. Composition The pendant is 72-74% gold, 18-20% silver and 6-9% copper, and the weight is 1.75g. Identification At the time of writing, only one analogue is known. This is a well-associated piece from a Middle Bronze Age hoard (circa 1300-1100 BC) from Burton, Wrexham (Treasure Case 04.2- Wales; awaiting publication). Although the pendants differ in detail there can be no doubt of their being the same class of object. Since the reporting of this pendant another example was found in West Sussex - see PAS database number SUSS-CB3674 Treasure Case Number: 2006 T263. |
