Italiano: È costituito da un'imboccatura montata su una capsula cilindrica, entrambe metalliche. All'interno della capsula è presente una membrana metallica, protetta da una rete, anch'essa metallica, posta nel punto di unione tra imboccatura e capsula. All'interno della capsula sono presenti un blocco di carbone fissato alla capsula e dei granuli di carbone. Dal retro della capsula sporgono i due elettrodi.
Questo microfono era parte dei primi apparecchi telefonici industriali e permetteva la trasmissione della voce.
Per funzionare doveva essere alimentato con una batteria a tensione costante collegata ai due elettrodi Parlando davanti alla membrana, questa vibrava producendo delle variazioni di pressione tra i due contatti di carbone che vibrando si allontanavano e si avvicinavano reciprocamente variando la pressione e quindi la resistenza del contatto. Questa variazione della resistenza faceva variare in maniera corrispondente, l'intensità della corrente nel circuito Le correnti così prodotte venivano inviate al ricevitore dell'apparecchio telefonico con cui si stava effettuando la conversazione, per essere ritrasformate in suoni corrispondenti.
