[edit]DescriptionMicrocline-bearing pyroxenite (Iron Hill Carbonatite Complex, late Neoproterozoic, -570 Ma; southwestern Colorado, USA) (15024543402).jpg |
Microcline-bearing pyroxenite (a.k.a. aegirine-bearing syenite) from the Precambrian of Colorado, USA (9.3 cm across at its widest). Southwestern Colorado’s Iron Hill Carbonatite Complex (a.k.a. Powderhorn Carbonatite Complex) has a mix of unusual intrusive igneous rocks and is known to have a relatively high concentration of scarce elements (e.g., Nb, Ti). It was intruded more than 570 million years ago, during the late Neoproterozoic. Some Early Paleozoic dikes have cut through a portion of the northern part of the complex. Rocks reported in the Iron Hill Carbonatite Complex principally include magnesiocarbonatite, pyroxenite, nepheline syenite, ijolite, and uncompahgrite. The Iron Hill Complex rock shown above has an unusual lithology - it's a microcline feldspar-bearing pyroxenite. The dark green component is aegirine pyroxene. The light-colored material is microcline (one of the potassium feldspar minerals). |
