Description

English: Memorial at the Michellspas tollhouse from 1848:

Old Road (Mostertshoek). This stone stands in the first wagon road that went over the mountain to Ceres. It was made by Jan Mostert in 1765. Donated by mr. and mrs. C. E. van Dyk. Established 29.9.1955. During centennial.
The memorial commemorates the old wagon pass / toll road, Mostertshoek, build by Jan Mostert of the farm Wolwekloof in 1765, and was donated by mr. and mrs. G.E. van Wyk as part of the Ceres centenary and unveiled on 29 September 1955.

The current pass was built in 1848 by Andrew Geddes Bain and named for the surveyor-general of the Cape, Charles Collier Michell, and replaced the precipitous Mostertshoek Pass. The Old Road's toll house, now a ruin, was near its highest point.
