Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Mica schist from the Precambrian of New York State, USA. (~7.9 centimeters across at its widest)

This attractive rock is a mica schist from New York State's Adirondack Mountains. The sample is dominated by bluish-colored mica. A fair amount of what appears to be quartz is visible in cross-section. This comes from the Balmat-Edward Talc Belt, which experienced upper amphibolite-grade to granulite-grade metamorphism at 1.13 billion years ago. This occurred during the Grenville Orogeny, an ancient mountain-building event in parts of what is now eastern North America.

Schist is an intermediate to high-grade, foliated metamorphic rock. It typically forms by metamorphism of phyllite (which itself is altered slate, which is altered shale). Schist can also have other precursor lithologies. Schist is composed of macroscopic crystals that usually glitter or sparkle in the light - this contrasts with the microscopic crystals in phyllite and slate.

Locality: United States Talc Company Mine, near the town of Talcville, Balmat-Edwards Mining District, southwestern St. Lawrence County, northwestern Adirondack Mountains, northern New York State, USA
