"Karol Miarka, an undaunted defender and leader of Upper Silesia folk, an indefatigable journalist and publisher, was born on the 22nd of October 1825 in Pielgrzymowice and died on the 15th of August 1882 in Cieszyn. He was an active organiser of the Silesian social and cultural movement, and contributed to forging links between Silesia and other regions of Poland. Paweł Stalmach, who awakened the Silesian people, fearless fighter in the defence of the nation’s rights, a dedicated journalist, born on the 13th of August 1824 in Bażanowice, died on the 13th of November 1891 in Cieszyn. He studied in Bratislava and Vienna and at the Slavic Congress in Prague declared that Silesian folk were part of the Polish nation. After returning to Cieszyn he became the editor of the newspaper Tygodnik Cieszyński, renamed Gwiazdka Cieszyńska in 1851. He helped to set up a host of Polish organisations; Czytelnia Polska (the Polish Library), Biblioteka dla Ludu Księstwa Cieszyńskiego (the Duchy of Cieszyn People’s Library). He was active in the founding of the first Polish Elementary School. Monsignor Ignacy Świeży, grammar school teacher, founder of the Związek Śląskich Katolików (the League of Silesian Catholics) and the Catholic organisation Dziedzictwo bł Jana Sarkandra, a long-serving deputy to the National Council and the Silesian Sejm. He was born on the 12th of October 1839 in Kończyce Wielkie and died on the 22nd of October 1902 in Cieszyn. He was the founder of the Catholic publishing house Dziedzictwo bł Jana Sarkandra dla Ludu Polskiego na Śląsku, founder of the Polish Grammar School in Cieszyn and Macierz Szkolna dla Księstwa Cieszyńskiego. He wrote a great number of articles and presented numerous talks."
