Description
English: Miako, later to be called Kyoto, was the capital of Japan for centuries. In 1603, when the first member of the Tokugawa dynasty came into power, he decided to establish his government in Edo (present-day Tokyo). The Mikado, the Japanese emperor who, as legend has it, descended from gods, continued to hold court in Kyoto. At the time of the Tokugawa shogunate, he played no more than a ceremonial role.
