English: Historical drawings of Aptychi from the Solnhofen platy limestone (Upper Jurassic of the Franconian Jura, Bavaria, Germany). Figs. 1-3 show a Laevaptychus latus (“Aptychus laevis latus”) and adhering matrix (held for the remains of the soft body (“foot”) of the “Aptychus animal” by von Meyer but is probably a partial internal mold of an ammonite) in external (Fig. 1) internal (2) and lateral (3) views. Fig. 4 shows a convex external mold of a Laevaptychus latus with the impression of the growth lines on the internal side of the Aptychus proper which is not preserved. The black line is the indication of the outline of the alleged soft body of the “Aptychus animal” but probably represents the outline of a cross section of an ammonite shell. Fig. 5 shows a somewhat crushed Laevaptychus latus in external view within the living chamber of a faintly preserved ammonite. |
