-pletion of this road by sections west of Chihuahua willopen up rich mining, agricultural and timber sections andwill greatly increase the traffic of the Mexican Central atChihuahua. In the meantime the latter company is haulinga large amount of material for the construction of the Ori-ent road in Mexico. It is not necessary to say more to show the value to theMexican Central of the City of Chihuahua. Before stop-ping I must add that the city is well paved, lighted withelectricity and has an American population of about 700souls. It is currently reported here that J. W. Conger, abrother of E. H. Conger, for a short time Ambassador toMexico, has obtained an option on the local street car sys-tem and electric light and power plant and that he pro-poses to establish a thoroughly modern trolley system forChihuahua and vicinity. If this is accomplished the citywill develop even more rapidly than heretofore and, ofcourse, all these things will mean larger earnings for theMexican Central. 17

Creel and General Snyman, the Boer generalwho has established a flourishing colony for his people-near Ortiz, about 50 miles south of here on the MexicanCentral. Enrique C. Creel on Mexico.^ HIHUAHUA, Mex, Aug. 23.—Today I had the honorand pleasure of a personal interview at the StateCapitol, or Palace, as it is called in Mexico, with Enrique C.Creel, Governor of the large and important State of Chi-huahua, president of the Banco Minero of this city, theBanco Central of Mexico City, and actively identified withnumerous other enterprises here and at other well knowncentres in the Republic. Mr. Creel said that matters are moving along smoothlyin Mexico and that the business of the country is steadilyexpanding. While he does not look for a boom in thiscountry as a result of the establishment of the new mone-tary system a few months ago, he does look for a gradualand permanent growth.
