he fish with dynamite. Up in the mountains above the valley the air was de-lightfully cool even at midday. The mountain sides werethickly wooded, the rocky soil was covered with fine greengrass, and beautiful ferns, from the delicate maiden-hair tothe large, broad-leaved species, were growing luxuriantly. It was indeed almost impossible to realize that I was inthe wilds of southern Mexico. I might have been in thewoods of New England in early summer time or amid theScottish Highlands, except that there were very few pinetrees. Birds, too, seemed to be scarce in these woods, andsave for an occasional whistle or chirp, silence reigned. There is, in fact, very little animal life in this part of thecountry. There are a few small gray deer in the moun-tains, but they are very rarely seen. I also noticed thatthere were very few insects at this season, no mosquitoesor other troublesome pests usually found in warm countries. A VALLEY IX THE SIERRAS.One of the charming scenes in Southern Mexico.
