Tome 87, n°4, 1980, p 687)
Saint Liphard (✝ 565) renouncing high loads, retired as a hermit to Magdunum at the age of 40 years. Liphard was a cousin of Clovis. Saint-Liphard and his disciple Urbice lived near the fountain and founded a monastery. The water of the fountain of Saint-Liphard is known to cure eye diseases. The cult of fountains is a pagan survival. The fact that the fountain take the name of the Holy says the victory of Christianity over the pagan worship. In the local legends, the action of the saints is presented as a "victorious struggle against an evil beast, usually a dragon, which symbolizes the animal paganism, or rather, more accurately, reflecting the memory of the destruction of . a place of pagan worship in our region, we find this fact repeatedly: Liphard intervened in Meung-sur-Loire, Loiret (...) ". (worship of fountains in France West and Central West. Pierre Audin in Annals of Britain and Western countries. Volume 87, No. 4, 1980, p 687) |
