This large atrium is home to American sculptures as well as various decorative arts, not to mention a very pricey cafeteria. With the unprecedented October snowstorm outside, the museum is crowded. It took me an hour in line to buy a light snack for lunch at the cafeteria. On the other hand, with the snow outside and the lighting inside, the ambiance is quite lovely. The centerpiece sculpture is Diana, done by Augustus Saint-Gaudens between 1892 and 1893. This is a scaled-down copy cast in 1928. The original had been made as a weathervane for Madison Square Garden until it was demolished in 1925; it was donated by New York Life Insurance Company to Philadelphia Museum of Art, where it has been ever since. I had seen the real thing in Philadelphia just three days prior. |
