They are carried by air currents and lodge on thestems or cladodes of the asparagus plants. These spores germinatein the presence of moisture and produce a mycelium which growsinto the asparagus plant through the stomata or breathing pores.These spring spores provide the infection which causes the summerrust or uredo stage. It is in this stage that the serious damage isdone. The first signs of summer rust appear in about two or threeweeks after the development of the cluster cups. The uredo sporesappear in clusters of single-celled, red-brown spores which rupturethe epidermis and are carried away by the air currents to reinfectother plants. At this stage the rust spreads rapidly. In warmweather accompanied by dew at night, the life cycle from uredo sporeto uredo spore is often less than 12 days. This is
