A well-known example of the work of this artist is anincense burner with doves and peacocks, in the Victoria andAlbert Museum, the doves especially being masterpieces ofmodelling, and an embodiment in bronze of the highestdevelopments of the naturalistic school. With the death of the last representative of this brilliantgroup of art founders, about the end of the first half of lastcentury, the art gradually passed into a stage of decadence,the lowest depths of which it but recently reached, and fromwhich it is only just emerging. Vast numbers of bronzes have indeed been cast,but they are too often of meretricious design and tawdryornament. Fortunately there are a few notable exceptions to thisstatement.
