| Description |
This beautifully preserved Me262 night fighter was captured at Schleswig in Northern Germany at the end of WW2. It had previously been operated by 10./NJG11 as 'red 8'. Given the Air Ministry serial 'A.M.50' and then the British military serial 'VH519', it was ferried to Farnborough for testing on 19th May 1945. On 6th July that year it was damaged in a landing accident at RAF Ford but was repaired. In March 1947 it was shipped to Capetown, South Africa and in 1950 it went on display at Dunnottar AB. It remained there until 1971 when it was taken to Snake Valley AB for restoration. It then moved to its current home at the South African National Museum of Military History, at Saxonwold, Johannesburg. South Africa. 16-9-2014 |
