Description
English: WkNr 191301

The Me163 was the only rocket-powered, tailless aircraft to ever see operational service. This was one of five examples shipped to the United States in the summer of 1945. It was given the Foreign Evaluation identity FE-500, later changed to T2-500, and test flown at Muroc dry lake, now known as Edwards AFB. It was towed to 35,000ft by a Boeing B-29 Superfortress and then released for an unpowered descent and landing. It was stored at Norton AFB in California until transferred to the Smithsonian Institute in 1954. Unrestored, it is seen on display in the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum. Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia 7th May 2015

Note:- Both FE-495 and T2-500 are quoted as being 191301. It is possible that FE-495 was renumbered as T2-500 in error. Whatever it’s ‘FE’ number, this Me163 is definitely both T2-500 and 191301.
