Title |
Mesolithic tranchet or Neolithic chipped flint axe. |
||
Description |
English: Probable Neolithic chipped flint axe (not polished), thin-butted, double convex. White patina with some patches of light grey with darker grey mottling; some patches of orange/brown iron staining. The axe has rounded ends and expands in plan from the butt to the blade end. It is thickest at c. 45mm from the butt end; it remains of similar thickness until c.30mm from the blade end (where thickness is 22.9mm), after which it tapers sharply to the blade. There is ancient damage to one of the long edges. Length 112.5mm, maximum width (at c.30mm from blade end) 45.8mm, maximum thickness (at c.45mm from butt end) 24.8mm, weight 116.0g. It is possible that this could be a Mesolithic tranchet axe rather than a Neolithic chipped axe, as the removals on the blade end are large and the blade end is curved, not straight, when viewed head-on from the end. However, a clear transverse flake removal platform does not survive on either surface of the blade. |
