Title
Mesolithic tranchet axehead
Description
English: A flint Mesolithic Tranchet axehead, possibly a Thames Pick, dating to the period c. 10,000 - 4001 BC. The axehead measures 120.44mm in length, is 24.37mm wide at the butt end, 50.09mm wide at the blade end, has a maximum thickness of 32.89mm, a minimum thickness of 1.79mm and weighs 177.94g.

The axehead has been bifacially flaked and has a pointed oval cross-section. It retains a small patch of cortex (<5%) on one surface. The butt is rounded and the axe widens along its length to the curved blade end which exhibits the characteristic transverse flake removal on one face.

The flint is a lightly patinated mottled light grey with lighter coloured, coarse inclusions. It exhibits small patches of iron staining on both faces.
