Description |
English: A flint tranchet axehead or pick of Neolithic date, about 4000 BC - 2500 BC. It is formed on mid to light grey flint. It is sub-rectangular in plan with one rounded end (the cutting edge) and slightly convex sides. It is a thick asymetrical oval in section, one face being shallower than the other. Both sides are covered with large flaked removals, leaving no cortex. The butt is narrow (19mm wide and 5.3mm thick) and fairly square. The cuttin edge is convex and is 33.5mm wide and 5mm thick. The pick is 173mm long, 36.8mm wide and 22.6mm thick. 149g.This sort of tool is found deposited in graves (Jason Dodds, pers. comm. 2/12/14) as well as lost through use. |
