Title
Mesolithic tranchet axe
Description
English: Mesolithic tranchet axe made from a flint nodule, cortex present on one end and on a small area of the side, the other surfaces are covered by light recortication, over an opaque, grey, flint. The general section is lozenge shaped, the flaking is coarse, bifacial flaking. The cutting edge appears damaged but was formed by the removal of single flakes on both faces; the eponymous 'tranchet' flakes. There is a narrowing of the axe around its mid-point which forms a waist. A Mesolithic date seems likely. Length 158mm, Width 50mm, Thickness 42mm, Mass 387.4g
