Mesolithic tranchet axe
Description
English: A complete struck flint tranchet axe of Mesolithic date. It is struck from a heavily patinated flint that is a mottled white/yellow/brown in colour. It is plano-convex in form and of tranchet type, both faces having all over flake removal and edge retouch. One side has a marked, ridged back and the cutting edge is convex in form with flake removal and some edge retouch, missing one corner of the cutting edge due to old breaks. The entire axe measures 127.22mm in length, 47.05mm in width, 29.90mm in thickness and 177.40g in weight. It dates to the Mesolithic period, c.8,300-4,500 BC.
