Title |
Mesolithic tranchet adze |
||
Description |
English: A flint tranchet adze of Mesolithic date. A close parallel for this piece can be seen in 'Prehistoric Flintwork' (Butler, 2005, p. 104., fig. 41, no. 2). For a similar adze on the PAS database, see BH-5B4C43. This tool type was probably used throughout the Mesolithic and into the early Neolithic, but the main period of production in the south-east appears to have been the late Mesolithic period (Butler, p. 99).
The adze has slightly convex long sides and tapers into a rounded cutting edge. At the proximal end is a flat area which represents part of a core platform. The axe is of roughly pointed-oval section and gradually tapers in thickness, towards the blade. Both surfaces have been worked, mainly by the removal of broad flakes, the flake removal scars for which angle downwards from the central ridge. One side of the blade shows evidence for the striking of a narrow transverse flake. The flint is a heavily patinated (and possibly re-cortified in places) mottled light grey to yellowish-white colour. At the proximal end is a quartzite inclusion. The artefact measures 108.5mm long, 41.6mm wide and 26.1mm thick. The weight is 134g. |
