Title |
Mesolithic non-tranchet adze |
||
Description |
English: A large biface of cream patinated flint. It is elongated and of peaked 'D' section so appears to have been a Mesolithic adze. The plan is of convex and symmetrical working tip with finer shallow flaking to give the shape and sharpness.There is no sign of a sharpening flake scar from the side unlike the more usual 'Tranchet axe', but non tranchet forms are also known in The Mesolithic. There is blunting and abrasion from use with a notch developed on the right side of the blade. The left margin is complete with large finishing soft hammer struck flake scars and heavy abrasion to not cut through the hafting sinews. The right margin is missing. The ventral flake scars are hence truncated and there is no edge abrasion. The right dorsal surface is a thermal natural surface and there is a large flaw facet near to the butt end. It appears that the adze fell apart in service from existing cracks in the nodule, which may have been taken from the land surface or it began to disintegrate after it was partially blunted and discarded due to exposure to frost etc. |
