Description
English: A flint Tranchet adze of Mesolithic date. A close parallel for this piece can be seen in 'Prehistoric Flintwork' (Butler, 2005, p. 104., fig. 41, no. 2). This tool type was probably used throughout the Mesolithic and into the early Neolithic, but the main period of production in the south-east appears to have been the late Mesolithic period (Butler, p. 99).

The tool is sub-oval in plan, having a slight curvature and a small, flattish portion at the haft end, where some of the original flint cortex remains. Both the upper and lower surfaces of the tool have been extensively worked, with numerous flake removal scars angling downwards and outwards from the central ridge. The vertical edges show evidence of having been chipped or ground into shape. The bottom edge is convex and sharp and has been formed by the removal, on one side, of a broad transverse 'sharpening flake'. The flint is a heavily-patinated light to mid bluish-grey colour.

The tool measures 104.5mm long, 43.5mm wide and 27mm thick. The weight is 143.17g.
