Title |
Mesolithic Tranchet Axe |
||
Description |
English: A large and complete tranchet type axehead of Mesolithic date. It has patinated and stained surfaces that are mixed grey in colour on one face and mixed brown on the other. The axe is roughly struck, plano-convex in form and with many heavy, large flake scars. The sides and butt end are steeply flaked and the cutting edge has an irregular, convex form. There are areas of cortex visible on both faces, as well as minor plough damage that in places reveals the unpatinated dark grey/black flint beneath the surface. This axe measures 180mm in length, 60.69mm in maximum width, 39.47mm in thickness, and weighs 506g. It is of Mesolithic date, c.8,300-4,500 BC. |
