Title
Mesolithic/ Neolithic pick
Description
English: A Mesolithic (10,000 - 4000 BC) flint pick with an off-centre lozengiform cross-section, the apex of each face being left of centre with the rounded end positioned uppermost.

Broad flake removals run generally from the apex to either long side. On one face there are narrow, long and thin removals from the apex to the rounded, thinner end of the object. To the opposite face at this point the flake removals are multi-directional and less clear. On this same face but at the opposite short end is a flake removal and possible hinge fracture beneath it, creating a horizonatal end extending into a triangle behind, the end here trapezoidal in cross-section. To the opposite face at this point the flake removals from the apex to the sides extend into this edge and are fore-shortened by it.
The flint is opaque and heavily patinated, a creamy white/grey in colour. The surface is quite worn. Iron staining is apparent along the arises.
It measures 101.8mm in length, 38.0mm in max.width, 22.9mm in max. thickness and weighs 93.47g.

With thanks to Mike Trevarthen and Ciorstaidh Hayward Trevarthen for the identification of this object. They comment that the wear and patination on this find suggests it is more likely to be of Mesolithic than Neolithic date (pers. comm. May 2018).
