Summary
[edit]DescriptionMerton Meadow Stand - geograph.org.uk - 1094099.jpg |
English: Merton Meadow Stand Main stand at Edgar Street Athletic Stadium. Built in the late 1960s to replace the old Dutch barn stand that was demolished when the A49, Edgar Street was widened - part of a series of improvements connected with the opening of the new bridge over the Wye.
The ground, like the cattle market, which it resembles has been due for redevelopment for years. In the 1970s it was one of the most modern in the lower divisions of the football league, but time has moved on and the place is now unfit for purpose and gets some serious criticism in the media. It is hoped to rebuild the spectator accommodation here, maybe even level the pitch - that is a real slope! This land legally has to remain a sports venue. While facilities remain primitive - the toilets have only just acquired a roof, at this time this was the cheapest place to watch league football in England.
