Description
English: Ex-Merseybus tow truck 8053 (reg. Q700 GBG), pictured during the Merseyside Transport Trust's open day, where it is now based (restricted to internal use pending work).

It is an ERF 6*2 tractor unit chassis with Gardner 6LXB engine and a Fuller 8-speed gearbox, fitted with recovery equipment comprising a 20 tonne TFL hydraulic crane and a 50 tonne powered winch. It was delivered new with a steel MW type cab, in the 1990s this was replaced by a second-hand C series fibreglass cab due to corrosion (hence categorized as a C-series in the Commons).

It was delivered new in 1975 to replace an ex-military AEC Matador which was by now not suitable for recovery of modern double-deckers. Originally given fleet number 53, it first operated on the trade plate 079 KA formerly used by the Matador. In 1988 it was given the permanent registration Q700 GBG after a change in regulations banning trade plate use on recovery vehicles. It was also renumbered 8053 around this time.

Originally delivered to Merseyside PTE and based out of their Edge Lane Works, it remained with the PTE's successors, Merseybus from 1986 and MTL from 1992 (albeit retaining Merseybus fleetnames). After Edge Lane Works closed, it was allocated to Carnegie Road Garage. By 1997 it had been withdrawn and stored, being as surplus to requirements. It passing into preservation in 1998.
