English: Merse farmland Viewed from Hilton, the farm buildings in the distance on the left are at New Horndean.
The following was sourced from www.mcbishop.co.uk/merse.htm :- The Merse is that part of the Tweed valley north of the river, and south of the Lammermuir Hills. The name may come from the Old English mersc, which means a marsh. Until the 17th century, the Merse was poorly drained, but the introduction of improved drainage led to the area becoming one of the leading agricultural regions of Scotland. |
