Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Merle B. Whitney House, 203 Morris Avenue, Buffalo, New York, June 2022. This two-and-a-half-story brick house stands in the tony Central Park section of the city and is an example of the then-popular Tudor Revival style of architecture, as exemplified by its asymmetrical façade, relatively small windows, understated main entrance tucked under the long sloping end of an asymmetrical gable, and the decorative half-timbering in the gablet above the second-story window at right. The house was constructed in 1927 by Burd & Jameson, one of the principal real estate development companies then building and selling homes in Central Park and other sections of North Buffalo. The eventual purchaser was Merle Bush Whitney (1885-1965), co-founder and co-namesake of the Whitney-Graham Company, a printing press headquartered on Monroe Street that specialized in catalogs, calendars, decorative booklets, and above all, maps. Whitney and his family continued living in the house until 1942, when the company was acquired by competitor Baker, Jones, Hausauer; though he was elevated to the position of vice-president of the merged business, he retired to California soon after.
