Merida ware costrel (aperture) |

Description |
English: A pottery barrel costrel of Merida red ware from Spain dating from the 16th century. The costrel is 325 mm long, 245 mm wide and 255 mm in height and at the neck, 8 mm in thickness. The fabric is a hard sandy ware with fine white mica inclusions and is reddish orange fading to pale orange in colour. It may originally have been coated with a thin layer of slip, but prolonged immersion in sea water has eroded the surface which is now coated with thin patches of marine salts and occasional calcified fragments of the tunnels of marine invertebrates. The main body of the vessel is a hollow, slightly elongated sub-sphere with a flattened base. At each end is a short sub-cylindrical knob that protrudes 52 mm from the surface of the vessel and is 55 mm in diameter with a shallow, conical tip. At each side are the remnants of the two attachments for a looped ribbon handle and at the top is a circular opening, 30 mm in diameter, for the mouth of the vessel within the broken collar of the neck. At this time, the main production of costrels, which were used for transporting liquids such as olive oil and wine, was Merida in the Extremadura region of western Spain.
Gaskell Brown (1979) illustrates two similar Merida ware barrel costrels found on the Castle Street, Plymouth excavations, on pp.85-86, figs.34-35, nos.270-271, which are dated from the 16th century. Fairclough (1976), illustrates a similar Merida ware barrel costrel found on the St Andrews Street, Plymouth excavations, on p.111, fig.44, no.541, which is classified as Group F and has parallels with those found on Spanish Armada wrecks dating from the 16th century. |
