[edit]DescriptionMercedes-Benz 219 Ponton (8259470763).jpg |
This is only the second Ponton I've ever got to see since I visited Mercedes-Benz's excellent museum at its home in Stuttgart, Germany. And the first presentable one - the previous one was a mere shell. The Ponton ("pontoon") was a line of simple, rugged, reliable sedans for postwar West Germany and beyond, and helped rebuild Mercedes-Benz. The Ponton, the first unibody design from Mercedes-Benz, is the ancestor of all current Mercedes-Benz sedans, including the C, E, and S classes. The 219 (chassis code W105) was an interesting model, built from 1956 to 1959. From the dashboard rearward, the car is identical to the 180/190 (W120), the original four-cylinder Ponton from 1953, complete with single-pane rear windows and the simpler instrumentation. But to the front is the longer nose of the 220, to house a bigger engine, a 2.2-liter single-carburetor 85-horsepower 6-cylinder. 27,845 were built. (Source: Wikipedia) This particular car's front plate is imitation European export plate. The plate number is actually the sequential number assigned to this car by the State of California in the 1970s; a real California plate is on the rear. California does require the display of front plates, though many motorists skirt around the issue by either displaying the front plate inside the windshield (to prevent theft - a possible issue with vanity plates), or by fabricating a faux-foreign plate like this with the same number as the real California plate. |
