Summary
[edit]DescriptionMercator Museum Sint-Niklaas, Belgium 01.jpg |
English: Mercator Museum. Gerardus Mercator (Gerard De Kremer or Gerardus Mercator Rupelmundanus), was born in Rupelmonde 1512 and died in Duisburg 1594. He was decisive for the development and expansion of cartography. Mercator came up with the ‘Mercator projection’ (cylindrical map projection), named after him and introduced also the word 'atlas'. Did you know that the font ‘Italic’ was also introduced by Mercator? His work had a decisive influence on later cartographers. Sailors were more than grateful to him for the work he did. The museum offers a rich collection of objects and maps created by Mercator and other cartographers. You will find objects and maps from a period of time from the 16th century to the present. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerardus_Mercator and https://www.museasintniklaas.be/
