Mengíbar – Combat of July 16, 1808

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Acción de Mengíbar (July 16, 1808), fought under the command of General Theodor von Reding (File:Teodoro_Reding.JPG), took place on the banks of Rio Guadalquivir, at Paso de la Barca, north of Mengíbar, the nearest passable ford, along the then road linking Toledo to Málaga.

This significant feat has long remained in the shadow of the more famous and decisive Victory of Bailén (July 19, 1808), fought three days later under command of General Francisco Javier Castaños (File:Francisco_Javier_Castaños.JPG), seconded by General Reding.

So far, the Acción de Mengíbar was only known to specialists.

Justice has nowadays been done since the first commemoration held on March 26, 2006 and more prominently by the inauguration, on October 25, 2014, of the exhibition then displayed in the Torre del Homenaje del Castillo, plaza de la Constitución. On Novembre 4, 2019, the exhibition was moved to the newly built Edificio de Usos Múltiples (see address below).  The room Acción de Mengíbar 1808 displays a model featuring ca. 750 toy soldiers generously presented by Don José Manuel Allendesalazar Valdés (1935-...).
In addition, the City Council decided on May 31, 2018 to rename a street as Calle Acción de Mengíbar.

Also, yearly re-enactments punctually bring to mind this important feat to which, regarding the napoléonic régime imposed onto Spain and Portugal, the famous words by Sir Winston Churchill, Novembre 1942, could also apply : This is not the end, this is not even the beginning of the end, this is just perhaps the end of the beginning.
