Description In 1841, John Quincy successfully defended 39 West Africans, known as the Mendi people, before the Supreme Court in the Amistad Case. They had been kidnapped from their home, sold into slavery, revolted, seized their ship, and killed their captors. The Bible was presented to John Quincy in gratitude for his service in their defense.
