[edit]DescriptionMen at work among barrels on the St. Louis Levee.jpg |
English: Men at work among barrels on the St. Louis Levee. Steamboats are docked along the levee in the background. Men at work among barrels on the St. Louis Levee.
From it?s earliest days, St. Louis prospered because of the Mississippi River. By the middle of the 19th century there were an estimated 600 steamboats operating out of St. Louis and over 400 wholesale houses along the riverfront. The coming of the railroad marked the beginning of the end of the era of major boat traffic up and down the river, but even today river boat traffic remains an important part of the economy of St. Louis.
