Howvenerable he looked—almost as if his namesake Jere-miah, the Prophet of the Old Testament, had returnedto earth to offer his prayer and give his benediction inpaternal love for the young students of the present. Butit was more than the Seniors, or the tutors, or the Presi-dent himself could do, to make the building seem cheer-ful, or attractive, or even solemn, unless with the solemn-ity of a winter wilderness. There was no organ in thebuilding, and, at the morning service, no singing. Oneof the tutors read a passage from the Scriptures, andthe President offered prayer. The Freshmen had theirseats assigned them in the pews in the rear of the Seniorsand Juniors—the Seniors occupying the front portion ofthe middle aisle, and the Juniors one of the side aisles.Immediately upon the close of the service, the Freshmenwere expected to leave the building, without waiting forany of th
