o OS o X o o «o Two Edwardian Houses. 211 The only original portions now remaining are the gate-house and the hall, forming opposite sides of a court, withsome portions of building adjoining the hall. Whencomplete, it probably consisted of a quadrangle surroundedby a moat which has entirely disappeared. The gatehouse,which has lost its top story, has the principal gateway andpostern recessed under the span of a fine, bold, mouldedarch which gives great character to the entrance. Thestone vaultings of the archway have been destroyed, as alsothe stair leading from the left-hand door; another doorleads into a small room that was probably used as a lowerguard-room. There is no provision for a portcullis or anyindication of fortification now remaining, though from thestructure of the building and the custom of the age, itwould have originally been made capable of defence. The range of buildings connected with the gatehousewere erected about the time of Charles I. for stables; thechambers
