Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Memorial to French PoWs in the Napoleonic Wars, Penicuik This memorial was erected in 1830 by Alexander Cowan, the owner of the nearby Valleyfield Paper Mills. It is in memory of the 309, mostly French, prisoners of war who died while being held in the Mill buildings between 1811 and 1814. The memorial has been renovated and made a focal point in the housing estate built on the sites of the erstwhile Valleyfield Paper Mill and the nearby railway station.
