English: Memorial plaque to Colonel Gardiner As this plaque on the wall of the ruined old church at Carriden states, Col. Gardiner was born nearby. Fighting in General Cope's Hanoverian army he commanded Gardiner's Dragoons at the Battle of Prestonpans, The one regiment to stand and fight. Ironically he was killed fighting in the grounds of his own estate, Bankton house. It is said he was shot twice, struck by a scythe and eventually killed with a blow from a Lochaber axe.A deeply religious man he had had a premonition of his own death.
He was buried at Tranent church. |
