Summary

[edit]
Description A slightly longer view of the cast metal plaque describing the Death Marches. Out of nearly 2500 POWs, only six survived. It is widely considered to be the single worst atrocity suffered by Australian servicemen during the Second World War. The marches were across wide marshland, dense jungle, and then up the eastern slope of Mount Kinabalu, and occurred between January and March 1945. The Japanese selected prisoners (mostly POWs of Australian and British origin) who were thought to be fit enough to carry baggage and supplies for the accompanying Japanese battalions relocating to the western coast. Those who collapsed from mal nutrition or fatigue were killed on the spot or left to die where they fell. (Kota Kinabalu, East Malaysia, Nov. 2013)
