Legally the inference is correct. The Bishopheld m.uch of the diocesan property in his own name. But inreality he was merely the guardian of this property, and consid-ered himself as not owning a dollar of it in the sense of absolutepersonal possession. Like his predecessor, Bishop Timon, Bishop Ryan came poorto the diocese; and, though the custodian of large trusts, he diedpoor—personally not claiming a penny.
