My second suggestion is a memorial to Jonathan Edwardson the site of the church which preceded the old Town Hall.The outline of its walls is, as you are well aware, plainly to beseen one-third of a mile to the south, opposite the post-office.It was there that Jonathan Edwards preached his most famoussermon. As you know, he was born in East Windsor, only ninemiles away. Enfield will honor itself by erecting a monument to the foremost man that Connecticut has produced, the greatesttheologian of the eighteenth century and one of the chief fore-runners of the Revolution. Before making the formal presentation of this memorial to the authorized representative of the citizens of the Town ofEnfield I have one other duty to perform in pursuance of theagreement ratified at the town meeting held on November 11,1915, and that is to hand this fund to the chairman of the com-mittee of the First Ecclesiastical Society of Enfield, who is alsothe chairman of this meeting. It is a great satisfaction to placethe fund in the hands of a man so efficient, so capable, so pains-taking and so agreeable as Mr. Hathaway, and I feel confidentthat the money will be wisely invested and the income carefullyexpended for the care and maintenance of the memorial and itsimmediate surroundings on the town lands.
