r,his widow or orphans. The army find that the common acts of humanity are notto be expected from the country they have rescued from tyrannyand that no reliance can be placed on those contracts and solemnobligations; they are therefore drove to this expedient to securethemselves in some measure against the miseries of poverty. It is likely that Thomas Abbey was at the Steuben head- 170 quarters during his career as an officer and also knew ColonelKirby. Ephraim Kirby became an officer in a Rhode Islandregiment but after the war returned to Litchfield and marriedRuth Marvin. One of his descendants, David Kirby, of NewYork, holds the insignia and other evidences of membership inthe Society. In closing, for the time for the train is drawing near, Iwish to repeat to all my invitation to visit the Cincinnati mansionand the beautiful region of the Highlands of the Hudson, throughwhich passes a fine State road, on the line of the old Albany-New York turnpike, near which the old house stands.
