Description
English: Memorial "Lost at Sea" in Vágur, Faroe Islands, in memory of the people from Vágur (mainly men) who lost their lives at sea, mostly by accidents. The memorial is a statue of a woman with a steer and behind the statue there are copper plates on the ground with the names of the dead. This is the first plates listing accidents and deaths from the year 1808 to 1896, the first being Dánjal Olsen við Gjógvará, who went missing with Nólsoyar Páll's ship North Star. Many of the first names are accidents which happened on land, but the persons fell from a hill down to the sea and died (fall til bakka), it could have been while they minded their sheep or while they were catching birds. The last name is Niels Petur Hjelm, who fell over board from the ship H/M Stanley in 1896, he was 40 years old. The youngest person on this plate was 12 year old Niels Pauli Leo í Sjúrðhúsi, who lost his live while sailing/rowing with a boat from the neighbour village Tvøroyri to Vágur in 1887. There were no roads back then.
